You Can Have Your Cake and Eat it

Once upon a ballroom you took my hand,
Tilted down in a bow,
"May I have this dance?"
Through the dresses, they missed us,
Our feet sharing secrets -
We're conspiring.
I never thought we'd end this way.
In this masquerade of chesire grins and raised chins,
Their blind smiles are vile and makeshift.
Together we could break hearts.
On the night sky's balcony,
You bent your knee and you begged me,
The dream is dying and I'm overdue to be gone,
To be long gone.
He smiled and said, "Shuffle my head."
One of us don't belong.
"Tap your feet together and swear you'll stay forever."
My knight on a rocking horse. My head on a chopping board.
When we depart I swear not to restart.
In this mad mess of uselessness, our promises are hopeless.
Through the mess, pity kissed us,
Our hearts shared our whispers.
